The Atypical Family follows the Bok family, a lineage blessed with supernatural abilities passed down through generations. However, the pressures and afflictions of modern life strip them of their powers: matriarch Bok Man-heum loses her prophetic dreams to chronic insomnia; daughter Bok Dong-hee loses her flight due to weight gain and body dysmorphia; and son Bok Gwi-ju loses his ability to time-travel to happy moments due to debilitating depression following the tragic loss of his wife. Meanwhile, young granddaughter Bok I-na hides behind oversized glasses, estranged and disconnected.
The fragile, stagnant dynamic of the household is upended when Do Da-hae, an enigmatic woman carrying heavy debts and ties to a predatory sauna-fronted fraud ring, enters their lives under false pretenses. Although she initially schemes to marry into the family's fortune, her presence paradoxically sparks the re-emergence of their supernatural gifts. As Da-hae uncovers the deep psychological wounds paralyzing each Bok family member, she becomes entangled in their emotional rehabilitation.
Across its 12-episode arc, the series shifts from an unconventional romantic comedy and family mystery into an emotionally poignant exploration of shared healing. As the characters confront unresolved guilt, societal expectations, and temporal paradoxes, the story illustrates that reclaiming one's strength requires mutual vulnerability and the willingness to let others in.
