Set in the aftermath of a catastrophic cosmic catastrophe known as the "Quiet Rapture"—an inexplicable cataclysm in which all stars, suns, and habitable planets vanish into total void—humanity's dwindling survivors cling to life aboard decaying space stations and derelict starships. Facing total resource exhaustion and systemic collapse, the ruling faction, the Consolidation of Iron, discovers an anomalous ocean composed entirely of blood on the barren extraterrestrial moon designated AT-5.
Desperate to harvest vital biological resources and anomalies, the Consolidation initiates blind reconnaissance missions. They construct a crudely reinforced, cramped miniature submersible (designated SM-13, grimly dubbed the "Iron Lung"). Because the extreme atmospheric and fluid pressure at the moon's floor would shatter standard viewports, the front window is completely welded shut with heavy armor plating.
A convict named Simon is welded inside the vessel for Expedition 13. Simon is promised a full pardon and unconditional freedom if he navigates the mapped coordinates, documents points of interest using a low-fidelity external camera, and gathers crucial data. Drifting completely blind through the viscous crimson abyss, Simon must operate solely by coordinate readouts, rudimentary navigational terminals, and eerie delayed still photographs, only to realize that he is not alone in the depths.
