Ordinary People (released internationally in many territories as The Villagers, original Korean title: 동네사람들) is a 2018 South Korean action-thriller and mystery directed by Im Jin-soon. The story follows Yeok Gi-cheol, a former national boxing coach dismissed from his position in Seoul after violently confronting corrupt match-fixing practices. Seeking a quiet life and a clean slate, he takes a temporary job as a physical education teacher and student dean at a remote all-girls high school in a seemingly peaceful rural town.
Upon arriving, Gi-cheol immediately senses an unsettling undercurrent beneath the town's pastoral facade. A female student named Han Soo-yeon has vanished without a trace, yet neither the local police nor the school administration shows any genuine interest in investigating her disappearance, hastily dismissing it as a simple runaway case. Only Soo-yeon's fiercely loyal best friend, Kang Yoo-jin, refuses to accept this verdict, stubbornly putting up missing person flyers and searching the neighborhood alone.
Drawn into Yoo-jin's desperate quest by his ingrained moral compass, Gi-cheol begins probing into the village's everyday routines. As the duo digs beneath the calm surface, they encounter a hostile wall of secrecy, complicit law enforcement, and influential figures determined to keep the town's darker side buried.
