Quinn Brenner's attempts to connect with her late mother inadvertently bridge a psychic connection to 'The Man Who Can't Breathe,' a former tenant of the apartment complex who died of severe respiratory illness and now traps souls in The Further to feed on their life force. After Quinn is struck by a car, her soul is loosened, allowing the entity to slowly pull her into the astral void while possessing her physical body.
When Specs and Tucker fail to contain the escalating possession, Elise steps in. Venturing deep into The Further, Elise is ambushed by the Bride in Black (Parker Crane), the demonic shade destined to murder her in the future. Overcoming her fear, Elise physically beats the entity, shouting 'Not today!' and reaffirming her purpose.
Within the entity's realm, Quinn has been disfigured—partially transformed into a faceless, limbless spirit puppet. Elise summons the genuine spirit of Quinn's mother, Lillith. Lillith empowers Quinn to fight back, tearing off the breathing mask from the entity's face, which destroys its hold and vanquishes it. Quinn returns safely to her body, and Lillith bids her a final, peaceful farewell. Elise agrees to partner permanently with Specs and Tucker, but the final shot reveals the Lipstick-Faced Demon watching Elise from the shadows of her own home.
